Dr. Dre & Ice Cube Speak on ‘Straight Outta Compton’ Influence
Straight Outta Compton is the long overdue biopic about our loved gangsters of hip-hop, N.W.A. With the release coming up, the true OGs of rap, Dr. Dre and Ice Cube, sat down to talk about the film’s connection to current issues.
Dre explained to The Hollywood Reporter how “crazy” it is that they faced so much criticism for their music and yet it translates so well into today’s culture.
“Now, it’s just like, ‘OK, we understand.’ This movie will keep shining a light on the problem, especially because of all the situations that are happening in Ferguson and here in Los Angeles. It’s definitely going to keep this situation in people’s minds and make sure that everyone out there knows that this is a problem that keeps happening still today.”
“It’s a constant situation between the powers that be and the neighborhoods we’ve come from. And most of the time you look and you see that it’s a thing where someone is abusing their authority or abusing their power and they’re shitting around.”
Although the edgy group did face a lot of side eyes, he gave credit reminiscing,
“It was always about free speech, being able to express yourself, whether people like it or not…That’s the great thing about being in this country, is to be able to speak your mind and not be censored.”
The team had a huge hand in the production of the final piece to make sure it was completely accurate and, most importantly, real.
