T-Pain is as versatile as any artist in hip-hop, and for a very long time, people refused to see that — which sent the 32-year-old into a depression that temporarily prohibited him from making any more music.
T-Pain stands for Tallahassee Pain, a nod to all the pain the artist born Faheem Rasheed Najm experienced while growing up there. But sure, go ahead reduce him to his knack for Auto-Tune.
Nevertheless, T-Pain is lifting himself out the shadows with OBLiViON, his first full album in six years, out today (Nov. 17). The album features Chris Brown, Ty Dolla $ign, Wale, Ne-Yo, Tiffany Evans and more.
Prior to the album's arrival, the two-time Grammy winner finished an acoustic tour to showcase his vocals in raw form. The tour's set list included stripped back versions “Buy U a Drank” and “Bartender” — 2007 smashes that both peaked in the top five the Billboard Hot 100.
There is Auto-Tune on OBLiVION, but the acoustic tour helped in waking people up to the fact that the device is a tool, not a disguise. You can purchase OBLiViON in full here or stream it below:
